PR-Crunch Watch - 'High' Tea NonsenseFollowing on from last week's post on PR bumf masquerading as credit crunch news, another offender has appeared in today's papers. Apparently, according to The Guardian, "the old-fashioned high tea is enjoying a credit crunch revival"... High tea, for those of us not born in the 1950s, is another name for afternoon tea - basically a pot of tea with cakes and scones. Apparently this is better value for money than a £5 cappuccino and £7 banana muffin. What's astonishing is that British people needed an economic downturn to realise that Starbucks were ripping them off. However, regardless of this piece of momentous news, it's clear that the article is another case of PR codswallop. How can I tell? Because The Guardian helpfully includes a quote from the executive chairman of the UK Tea Council in the third paragraph - a quote which reads like it's been copied word for word from a press release, presumably sent by the UK Tea Council itself... So I'm going to make a prediction - before the end of October expect to see cutting edge news stories about how people have started saving the money previously spent on toilet roll by wiping their arses with newspaper...
