"Freecording Is..." a load of old bollocks, no?Take a look at this frankly ridiculous promotional webpage for Canon camcorders over at The Guardian . It's trying awfully hard isn't it? Freecording! Apparently, that's "living and shooting at the same time"! Who'd have thought that was possible? Except, of course, it's all horrible bollocks. By that definition anyone who has ever used a video camera must have been 'freecording'. Those annoying tourists on the bus in to work weren't making a documenting their holiday to London, they were freecording. That paedophile hiding in the bushes over there? He's freecording! And he scores extra points, because he's living and shooting AND wanking at the same time... I had no idea that using a camcorder was in such a dire need of a hip and groovy make over, but that clearly shows what I know. Haven't "young people" been making videos on their camera phones for years now? Five minutes on YouTube would suggest so. But I guess, from Canon's perspective anyway, they've been doing it wrong - because until now, they had simply been making videos instead of... freecording! Of course, no one actually goes to any trouble to actually define what they mean by the term 'freecording'. As you'll know by now, the 'rules are that there are no rules'. And that's a masterstroke on behalf of the marketing creative who 'thought' this whole idea up. It's kind of like saying to the guy who commissioned the piece, "my idea is I have no idea - beyond shamelessly patronising Guardian readers with pretentions of coolness to within an inch of their lives, after which they'll all run out and buy canon video cameras (because they're the only ones up to the task of freecording) and freecord to their hearts content...

im glad it's not just me who
im glad it's not just me who was slightly sickened by canon's latest ad campaign. Freecording has to be the most sickening nonsense idea a corporation has invented to squeeze more money out of people.
"shaking up old-school ideas of camcording and changing the way you film?"
They are just using a camcorder as people have for the last 30 years!
Also, surely the guardian would need to state somewhere that their supposed freecording "article" was infact an advert
Of course it is
Of course it is all bollocks, they are struggling to climb on to a bandwagon that they are making out they invented. You are right, YouTube has existed for years. I bet this whole ad campaign was focus grouped to shit. "Ohh the kids are cool, lets try and be like the kids!" The silly coroprate cocklobbers!
(Although I don't really care because they are giving away free cameras, and I want one).
Aaaahaha absolutely. There is
Aaaahaha absolutely. There is absolutely no substance whatsoever to "Freecording"; it's an extremely transparent, shameless marketing ploy. It'd be a shame for it to work, which it may well do.
But hey, while they're still giving away cameras, I'd better enter this bullshit competition. Then I can produce a well-coordinated counter-freecording campaign in glorious HD.

The article (in fact, the whole microsite) states this very clearly - both with the words 'Advertisement Feature' above the badge, and with the badge itself stating it is 'in association' with Canon.
